Artistic Statement

As a sound designer, I try to always produce a sound design that helps the audience leave behind the problems of life as they enter the doors of the theatre and to create an emotional connection with the characters and people they see portrayed on the stage. It is my personal philosophy that we use sound to help the audience connect emotionally with a story. This may take different forms, ranging from designing a system that is able to faithfully reproduce dialogue at every seat in a house, to building layered and complex backgrounds that help immerse the audience in the world of the characters. Whatever the specifics may be, the goal is always the same. We are there as storytellers, and it is our responsibility to create an engaging story that captivates the audience.

I view my work as a designer as a series of small choices that amount to powerful overall experiences. I found it was easy when I was a younger designer to brush off seemingly small choices as inconsequential but have since discovered that not settling for ‘good enough’ creates a much more effective design. Whether it is spending the extra time to find the right layers for a background, or finessing delay times to get the front fills blended just right, I place great effort in making sure the small details are there to create a more polished and complete design. The audience may not notice them all, but I feel strongly that they ultimately combine to create a more effective storytelling environment.
